Rhyme shield is also one of the best shields you can get pre Spirit Monarch (that you can also use if you can get the base).
If you want safety, Smoke runeword is very cheap and valuable for you and your merc early game. + to summoning/necro skills amu is also very nice for the beginning. Lore helmet is also very good if you don't have anything else. Spirit sword for your necro is very easily obtainable and gives you insane value.
Insight in elite polearm and some rares for merc are enough to get first couple of kills for your summons and then to have decent mana sustain for your corpse explosion. If just first, you can easily finish hell with if you roll fishymancer (max skeletons, synergies, maybe some revives, one point into amplify damage and then max corpse explosion), you can just progress with hardly any gear.
